The Global/Regional Integrated Model System-Earth System Model (GRIMs-ESM) was integrated over a long-term period to evaluate its simulation performance and to improve the model's accuracy. The GRIMs-ESM is an Earth system model that couples the atmospheric chemistry model GRIMs-CCM, the land surface model Noah-MP, and the ocean model NEMO. GRIMs-CCM consists of 28 layers, while NEMO consists of 50 layers. Variables such as wind stress, net solar radiation, precipitation, and evaporation from GRIMs-CCM, and sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice concentration from NEMO, are exchanged every three hours. When the simulation performance was analyzed with a focus on ENSO and East Asian climate variability, the ENSO phenomenon was observed; however, its intensity differed from that in the reanalysis data. Similarly, the intensity of East Asian climate variability also showed discrepancies compared to the reanalysis data. This degradation in simulation performance appears to be caused by differences in the strength of air-sea coupling. Therefore, future experiments will be conducted to adjust air-sea coupling parameters and net heat balance.
