The energy of tropical cyclones (TC) comes from ocean, via complex TC-ocean interaction, ocean provides enthalpy flux for TCs development. Not only sea surface temperature (SST), subsurface ocean temperature and salinity structures (i.e. profiles), as well as TCs attributes (e.g., size and translation speed) are all important governing factors in the TC-ocean interaction to determine the TC-Ocean coupling (cooling) effect and hence fluxes. These processes are of critical importance for TCs LMI (Lifetime Maximum Intensity) as well as RI (Rapid Intensification). This research presents recent advancements in this field of TC-ocean interaction, focusing on high-impact TCs. Research results include the record-breaking Category 6 TCs (defined as > 160 kts; Lin et al. 2014; 2021); marine heat waves fueling of typhoons prior to landfall (Pun et al. 2023), as well as the influence of ocean internal tides and its role in modify TC intensity in the marginal seas (Guan et al. 2024).
