Evaluation of Ocean Model Results in the Coupled Korean Integrated Model

The Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS) is developing a coupled modeling system that integrates several components. The system includes the Korea Integrated Model (KIM) for atmospheric forecasting, Noah with multiparameterization (NoahMP) for land surface model, Nucleus for European Modeling of the Ocean (NEMO) for ocean model, Sea Ice modeling Integrated Initiative (SI3) for sea-ice model, and Wave Watch III (WW3) for wave model using the Model Coupling Toolkit (MCT). The NEMO ocean model requires accurate results to properly simulate momentum, moisture, and heat fluxes at the air-sea and sea-ice interface. Therefore, the accuracy of NEMO impacts the performance of other components in the coupled system. This study presents the validation results of the ocean model in the coupled system. The validation of the ocean model is conducted using seasonal experiment results and ARGO observational dataset. The validation results evaluate the current simulation performance of the ocean model and identify aspects for improvement.
