Climate extremes in East Asia

East Asia is renowned for its rich history, cultural heritage, economic power, and technological advances. However, East Asia has witnessed the fastest warming rate of mean temperature over global land. Subsequently, the frequency of extreme weather events including heatwaves and flooding has been substantially increased since the late-1990s. The intensification of extremes, that exceeds natural variability, has resulted in more frequent occurrence of compound extreme events. We comprehensively review the historical perspectives, future projections, and underlying mechanisms for East Asian extreme weather events to address challenges for the 1.6 billion population. Specifically, we show the projected changes in the intensity and frequency of hot temperature extreme, extreme precipitation, and droughts in East Asia at global warming levels of 1, 1.5, 2, and 4 relative to 1850?1900. From this future perspective, we suggest unresolved issues on East Asian extreme weather events.
