Lightning is a severe transient discharge phenomenon that occurs in strong convective thunderstorm clouds. It arises from the intense electrification process that generates a robust electric field, orchestrated by the complex coupling of cloud microphysics and thermodynamics. Since the charged hydrometeor particles are also subjected to electric field forces in the electric field, leading to changes in their state of motion and transport, the cloud electrification and lightning activities also provide feedback to the cloud microphysics and thermodynamics. In addition, lightning breaks down the air, leading to instantaneous high temperatures and complete ionization in the channel, producing nitrogen oxides, ozone, and even hydroxyl radicals, with non-negligible atmospheric chemical effects. Rocket triggering lightning is a technique for artificially and actively inducing lightning during natural thunderstorms. It has played an important role in research into the physics of lightning, the mechanisms of lightning disasters and the testing of lightning protection. In this paper, we briefly review the recent progress of the SHAndong Triggering Lightning Experiment (SHATLE), including the extension of its application to the quantitative measurement of lightning NOx through the design and development of a detection system. In addition, we also discuss the effects of lightning on the electrical environment of thunderstorm, as from the aspects of mechanisms, technical solutions, and operational devices.
