Typically, mesoscale models obtain their initial and boundary conditions from global models, but there are few studies on the effect of initial data on lightning activity prediction. In addition, different regions may react differently to changes in initial data and there has been little studies on this topic in some regions (such as South Korea area). In this study, the effect of initial conditions on lightning activity prediction was investigated using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF)-ELEC model, which consists of the WRF model and the Electrification Package (ELEC). A specific lightning case over the South Korea was selected for in-depth study. Numerical experiments were performed to identify how initial and boundary data affect lightning case simulation, and the numerical simulation results were verified against lightning observations using qualitative and quantitative methods. Such analysis and verification are expected to be helpful in quantitatively understanding the effect of initial and boundary data on lightning simulation.
