In response to the growing need for customised regional ocean modelling setups, we present key principles and practices to streamline the creation of new configurations, especially for beginners. While the principles are general, the practical advice is focused on the NEMO (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean) framework. This work emphasises the importance of reproducibility and encourages its adoption by showcasing the benefits to the community and users. Key elements of this approach include reproducible workflows and standardised assessments, with the additional effort required being justified by the added value generated. The companion paper (Polton et al. 2023, GMD) breaks down the complex build process into stages and offers guidance, advice, and insights for each component. This presentation summarises that advice, compiled from the NEMO user community, and outlines principles and practices applicable to any regional ocean modelling framework. The goal of this presentation is to enhance the skill set of the user community and speed up the development of new configurations, allowing more time for utilising these setups.
